The history of the Subway chain, which today consists of more than 32000 restaurants in 90 countries of the world, is connected to the name of Fred DeLuca, a founder and a president of the Subway Company. DeLuca opened his first sandwich shop in 1965 at the age of only 17. At that time young Fred had two main concerns: graduating from high school and getting financial support to pay for the university. Working part-time at an equipment warehouse, Fred realized he would never be able to earn enough to finance his further studies.

That summer of 1965 Fred attended a picnic, which changed his life forever. He met an old family friend, Dr. Peter Buck and shared his concerns with him. Dr.Buck made Fred an unexpected proposal — to open a sandwich shop. After some consideration the two decided to start the business together. Dr.Buck lent DeLuca $1000, and Fred agreed to run the business.

The first store was opened in Bridgeport, CT. under the sign «Pete’s Super Subarines». A few years later the name was changed to «Subway Salads and Sandwiches», because when people heard the name «Pete’s Submarines» they thought that the restaurant was selling pizza!

By the end of the year 1974 the company had half the number of restaurants they had planned in the beginning, 16. At that time the concept of franchising was becoming more and more popular, so the partners decided to implement the idea with their sandwich business. In 1987 a 1000th Subway restaurant opening was celebrated.

Today the Subway chain is one of the most rapid developing fastfood chains in the world. Reaching almost 1000 new stores annually. And in 2005 Subway was called «The world’s best franchising system» for the 14th time! (according to the Entrepreneur’s Magazine rating).
